It has been a pretty crazy weekend. But in all seriousness, it has been a pretty crazy weekend. I don’t mean to touch on the ACC in this spot so I won’t. I really don’t want to think about the ACC at all. As an NC State alumnus, an alumnus who attended the NC State-North Carolina game at Chapel Hill, this weekend was pretty horrible. That includes the fact that I go to church on Sunday in Chapel Hill. God save me.
However, in the overall picture of the race for the BCS Championship, sharp turns on the road took place this past weekend. The previously No. 2 Florida Gators took a tough loss against an impressive Georgia Bulldogs team that really wanted to win. I watched the game and from early on I could have called the end to the Gators championship dreams. It has been a great comeback season for Florida, but the offense line just wasn’t there on Saturday, on a day the Bulldogs defense showed up strong.
As it stands, Alabama holds the No. 1 spot (of course), with #2 Kansas State, #3 Notre Dame, and #4 Oregon in the race to the top.
The Case against Oregon
Look, no hard feelings against the Ducks, but my thoughts are the same thoughts of the commentators on…well, on just about every sports network out there. Oregon needs a tougher schedule if they want to be considered for the No. 2 spot. Yes, they are a great team and one of the top programs in the country. No. 4 even. But not tough enough compared to Notre Dame’s and Kansas State’s schedules. The way I see it, the only way the Ducks are getting to the championship is by Notre Dame and/or Kansas State losing one of its last games, which is going to be a long shot.
Irish vs. Wildcats
I said it last week, but not many believed me. Notre Dame is a contender in the race for the championship. Yes, I did only mention it as a final closing point last week, but almost a week later and the Fighting Irish hold the No. 3 spot in the country. Crazy right? Well, no, not all that crazy when you see the Irish fight for every yard of the gridiron against Oklahoma. That was a great game with a very unfortunate final quarter for the Sooners.
What the Notre Dame-Oklahoma game taught us was that the Fighting Irish can fight with the best and come out on top. Unfortunately for the Irish, if both ND and Kansas State end up undefeated at the end of the month, I see the No. 2 spot sticking with the Wildcats.
My prediction for the BCS Championship Game: No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. No. 2 Kansas State Wildcats. Let’s hope the gridiron doesn’t prove me wrong.
